A Team Leader is someone in the workplace who is willing to take a leading role in raising awareness about Bike to Work Week and motivating co-workers to participate before and during the event week. The Team Leader is supported by the Bike to Work Week team with posters, tips, and other resources to share with their team. Unless otherwise noted, the first person to sign up a team will become the Team Leader.
How it Works for Team Leaders:
- Register your company or department for Bike to Work Weekusing the Commute Tracker tool. Click on the MyTeam tab and follow the instructions. (You need to be logged in to use the tool) Note: Organizations can register more than one team.
- Encourage your co-workers to join you. They need to sign up too, so send them an email about what you’re doing. Tell them your team name, and direct them to the website. Our handy form email has all the information you’ll need. Team Leaders who recruit the most new cyclists from among their colleagues are eligible to win a bike in our Roll Models competition. Here's a motivational letter you can display in the lunch room.
- Get your company involved:
- Talk to them about organizing prizes and challenges for your workplace team.
- Enquire about hosting a cycling skills workshop for employees.
- Hold an information meeting at lunch and use this BtWW How-to presentation to help sign up teammates
- Organize a breakfast or lunch to celebrate your team’s accomplishments.
- Talk to your employer about creating a temporary end-of-trip facility if one does not already exist. Make sure there’s a safe place for people to lock their bikes, and look around for shower facilities near your workplace if there aren’t any on site. Tell your co-workers about them.
- Make a Bike to Work Week display. Does your workplace have a bulletin board where events and workplace wellness information is posted? Download a Bike to Work poster and promote the event at your office. Information about Streetwise Cycling courses, Bike to Work tips, bike maps and other resources are available on the VACC website, or call us at (604) 558-2002 to find out more.
- Organize a route-planning session for co-workers who have never tried cycling to work. Partnering new cyclists with an experienced rider who lives nearby is a great way to reduce fears and apprehension, plus it fosters team spirit!
- Monitor your team’s participation on the View Results tab of the Commute Tracker tool. This gives you up-to-the-minute results on which team and organization is winning, so you can go for your Organization award and motivate your teams to be the best!
